Alvarado

Cartago, Costa Rica

Why visit Alvarado?

Alvarado is a small canton in the southern part of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, centred on the town of Pacayas. The canton is predominantly rural and agricultural, with coffee plantations, dairy farms, and vegetable gardens covering the rolling highland terrain. It sits at roughly 1,400–1,800 m elevation, giving it a cool, pleasant climate year-round.

The canton was established in 1908 and named after the Alvarado family, historically prominent in the region. The area retains a deeply traditional Costa Rican character, with small communities connected by narrow mountain roads. The economy is based on agriculture — particularly coffee, potatoes, onions, and dairy — and the pace of life is unhurried.

Alvarado enjoys the mild highland climate of the Central Valley, with temperatures averaging 16–22°C. The dry season (December to April) is ideal for visiting, while the rainy season brings regular afternoon downpours. The higher elevations can be chilly in the early morning.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela, approximately 55 km west — about 1.5 hours by road.

By Car / Road

From Cartago city, head south on Route 2 toward Paraíso, then take local roads east into the hills — approximately 20–25 km, about 35 minutes. From San José, the drive is about 50 km (1–1.5 hours). Bus service from Cartago to Pacayas runs several times daily.

Local roads are narrow and winding, mostly paved but some gravel sections. A car is the most practical way to explore the canton. Walking is fine within the small communities. Taxis are available in Pacayas.
