El Guarco
Cartago, Costa Rica
Why visit El Guarco?
El Guarco is a canton in the southwestern part of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, centred on the town of Tejar del Guarco. The canton occupies a transitional zone between the Central Valley highlands and the mountainous terrain leading toward Cerro de la Muerte and the southern highlands. Agriculture — coffee, dairy, and mixed farming — forms the backbone of the local economy.
The canton takes its name from El Guarco, a pre-Columbian indigenous chief who ruled the valley area before Spanish colonization. The region has a long history of settlement, and the canton was formally established in 1939. Tejar, the canton's main town, is a modest commercial centre with a growing residential population as Cartago's influence expands.
El Guarco sits at approximately 1,300–1,500 m elevation, enjoying the mild, temperate climate of the Central Valley. Temperatures range from 16–24°C year-round. The dry season runs from December to April, with the rainy season (May–November) bringing afternoon showers. The landscape is green and lush throughout the year.
