Poas

Alajuela, Costa Rica

Why visit Poas?

Poás is a small rural district (distrito) in the Alajuela canton, centred on the town of Poás de Alajuela. Located at approximately 1,200 metres elevation on the slopes of Poás Volcano, the area is known for its cool mountain air, lush dairy farms, and proximity to Poás Volcano National Park — one of Costa Rica's most visited natural attractions. The landscape is a patchwork of coffee plantations, strawberry fields, and cattle pastures with stunning views of the Central Valley below.

The climate is notably cooler than the valley floor, with temperatures ranging from 14–22 °C and frequent mist and cloud cover, especially in the afternoons. Mornings typically offer the clearest views of the volcano's crater. The rainy season (May–November) brings heavy moisture, while the dry season (December–April) is the best time for crater visibility.

Poás is primarily a day-trip destination from Alajuela or San José, though several charming B&Bs and eco-lodges in the area make it worthwhile as an overnight base for exploring the volcano and surrounding highlands.

By Car / Road

From Alajuela, take Route 107 north through Fraijanes — approximately 35 km to the national park entrance, about 45 minutes to 1 hour on winding mountain roads.
