Palmares

Alajuela, Costa Rica

Why visit Palmares?

Palmares is a small but lively agricultural town in the western Central Valley of Alajuela Province, best known for hosting one of Costa Rica's largest and most boisterous annual festivals — the Fiestas de Palmares. Located at about 1,000 metres elevation, the town has a pleasant climate, a strong coffee and dairy economy, and a welcoming, community-oriented character.

The town centre is compact, with a traditional colonial grid radiating from a central park and parish church. Beyond the fiesta season (January), Palmares is a quiet place that offers an authentic taste of small-town Costa Rican life. The surrounding countryside is scenic, with coffee plantations and rolling green hills.

The climate is mild year-round (18–27 °C), with a dry season from December to April and rainy afternoons from May to November. The town is strategically located on the Interamericana corridor, making it an easy stopover.
