Los Chiles

Alajuela, Costa Rica

Why visit Los Chiles?

Los Chiles is a small frontier town in the far northern tip of Alajuela Province, situated on the banks of the San Juan River which forms the border with Nicaragua. At just 40 metres elevation, it has a hot, tropical climate (28–34 °C) with heavy rainfall year-round. The town is the last major Costa Rican settlement before the Nicaraguan border and serves as a transit point for travellers heading to or from Nicaragua via the river.

The economy revolves around agriculture (rice, cattle, palm oil) and cross-border trade. Los Chiles has a frontier-town atmosphere — bilingual (Spanish and Miskito/Creole-speaking communities), laid-back, and largely untouched by tourism. The surrounding wetlands and river systems are rich in wildlife, making the area appealing to birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
