Guatuso

Alajuela, Costa Rica

Why visit Guatuso?

Guatuso is a small canton in the northern lowlands of Alajuela Province, centred on the town of San Rafael de Guatuso. Located at about 60 metres elevation near the base of Tenorio Volcano, the canton has a hot, tropical climate (28–34 °c) with heavy rainfall. The area is largely agricultural — pineapple, rice, and cattle — and is one of the less-visited corners of Alajuela Province.

Guatuso is known primarily for its proximity to the Río Celeste and Tenorio Volcano National Park, which lie in the northwest of the canton. The Maleku indigenous community, one of Costa Rica's last remaining indigenous groups, has a reservation near San Rafael and maintains traditional cultural practices including crafts, language, and ceremonies.

The town of San Rafael de Guatuso is small but has basic services including shops, restaurants, and accommodation. It offers a quieter, more affordable alternative to staying near La Fortuna while still providing access to the Río Celeste area.
