About Ya'an

Ya'an (雅安; Yǎ'ān) is a prefecture-level city in western Sichuan, located at the foothills of the Tibetan Plateau on the upper reaches of the Qingyi River. It is known as the "Rain City" for its frequent drizzle — the moist climate makes for lush green surroundings. Ya'an is most famous as the home of the Bifengxia Panda Base (a giant panda breeding and research centre) and as the starting point for the Sichuan–Tibet Highway (G318) — the famous route into Tibet. The city also has a charming old town and is the gateway to the spectacular natural scenery of western Sichuan. The climate is subtropical with abundant rainfall. Spring and autumn are best, avoiding the heavy rains of summer.
