Why visit Langzhong?

Langzhong (阆中; Làngzhōng) is a historic city in northeastern Sichuan, now administered as a county-level city under Nanchong. It is one of the best-preserved ancient walled cities in China, with a history spanning over 2,300 years. Langzhong was a major centre of the Ba kingdom and later an important stop on the ancient Shu Road network and the Jialing River shipping route. The old town is a grid of flagstone streets lined with Ming and Qing Dynasty courtyard houses, temples, and shops, enclosed by a city wall dating to the Ming Dynasty. Langzhong is also famous as the birthplace of Chinese New Year celebrations — according to legend, the mythical beast Nian was tamed here. The Huaguang Tower, standing 50 m tall, is the city's iconic landmark. The climate is subtropical monsoon. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
