Why visit Jiuzhaigou?

Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟; Jiǔzhàigōu, "Valley of Nine Villages") is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most famous natural wonders, located in the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in northern Sichuan. It is a spectacular valley of crystal-clear turquoise lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and dense forests — a landscape that has been described as a "fairyland on Earth." The park was severely damaged by the 2017 earthquake but has since largely recovered and reopened. The name comes from the nine Tibetan villages that dot the valley. Autumn (October–November) is the most spectacular season, when the leaves turn gold and crimson, but the park is beautiful year-round. The climate is highland temperate — cool summers and cold, snowy winters. The park is at 2,000–3,100 m elevation.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH IATA) is about 70 km from the park, with flights from Chengdu (45 minutes), Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. The airport is at 3,400 m — take it easy to avoid altitude sickness. Shuttle buses connect the airport to the park entrance (¥45, 1.5 hours).

By Train

The nearest railway station is at Chengdu (430 km). A new high-speed line to Jiuzhaigou is under construction. For now, long-distance buses are the main option.

By Car / Road

The drive from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou takes about 7–8 hours via the G213 National Highway. The scenery along the way is spectacular. Numerous buses depart from Chengdu's Chadianzi Bus Station (¥150–200, 8–10 hours).

The park is served by an efficient internal shuttle bus system (¥90 included in the ticket) that stops at major scenic points. Walking trails connect most sites. The valley is Y-shaped — the main Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley converge at the Tree-Zheng Lakes area.
