Xinzhou
Shanxi Sheng, China
Why visit Xinzhou?
Xinzhou spans the Hutuo River basin between the Taihang Mountains to the east and the Lüliang Mountains to the west. The territory has served as a strategic military and trade corridor since the Warring States period, when it sat on the frontier between the Central Plains dynasties and northern nomadic groups. Today, the prefecture covers 14 county-level divisions. The urban center is Xinfu District (historically known as Xiurong), while the primary visitor destinations lie scattered across outlying counties: Wutai County to the northeast, Dai County to the north, Ningwu County to the northwest, and Pianguan County along the western border.
Geographically, over 85 percent of the prefecture consists of mountains and loess plateau terrain. Altitudes range from roughly 800 meters (2,625 feet) in the Hutuo River valley to 3,058 meters (10,033 feet) at Yedou Peak on Mount Wutai, the highest summit in northern China. Along its western frontier, the Great Wall meets the deep gorges of the Yellow River at Laoniuwan.
The climate is continental monsoon, characterized by cold, dry winters and warm, moderately wet summers. The valleys experience hot midsummer days, but high-altitude areas—particularly the peaks and temple valleys of Mount Wutai—remain cool throughout July and August.
