Hulunbuir
Nei Mongol Zizhiqu, China
Why visit Hulunbuir?
Hulunbuir (呼伦贝尔; Hūlúnbèi'ěr) is a vast prefecture-level city in northeastern Inner Mongolia, named after the Hulun and Buir Lakes. It covers an enormous 263,000 km² — roughly the size of New Zealand — making it the largest city (by area) in China. Hulunbuir has China's most spectacular grasslands — the Hulunbuir Grassland is often called the "Most Pristine Prairie" in China — as well as the Greater Khingan Mountains, dense birch and pine forests, the Erguna River border with Russia, and a rich mix of Mongol, Russian, and Evenki cultures. The city's administrative centre is Hailar. The climate is subarctic continental with long, bitterly cold winters and short, warm summers. June–August is the only viable visitor season.
