About Sha Tin
Sha Tin (沙田) is a major new town in the eastern New Territories, centred on the Shing Mun River and surrounded by wooded hills. Sha Tin exemplifies Hong Kong's post-war new town development — planned and built from the 1970s onwards on reclaimed farmland, now home to over 700,000 people. It is a key transport hub and a major destination for shopping, dining, and cultural attractions, including the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Sha Tin Racecourse.
The town is bisected by the Shing Mun River, which is lined with cycling tracks and pedestrian promenades — a popular weekend recreation area. The Sha Tin area also includes the historic village of Tai Wai and the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery on a hillside overlooking the town.
