Mbonge

South-West, Cameroon

Why visit Mbonge?

Mbonge is a town in Meme Division, South-West Region, about 56km from Kumba. The Mbonge council, established in 1977, is one of Cameroon's largest by area, spanning some 3,000 square kilometres and around 86 villages with a combined population of over 200,000. Local tradition holds the town was founded by Mbonge, son of Bateka, who settled at a site called Liene that grew into present-day Mbonge; his descendants went on to found dozens more villages across Meme Division. The local economy is built on smallholder farming — cocoa, cassava, plantains, and yams are the main crops.
