Tombel

South-West, Cameroon

Why visit Tombel?

Tombel is a town and arrondissement in the Kupé-Manengouba Division of Cameroon's South-West Region, on the western slopes of Mount Kupe within the Tombel Graben, a volcanic field spanning roughly 800 km². The subdivision covers about 1,007 km² and had a population of around 110,000 at the most recent division-level count. It was created in 1993 as one of three subdivisions of Kupé-Manengouba Division, alongside Bangem and Nguti. The area's fertile volcanic soils support subsistence farming (maize, cassava, plantains, cocoyams, beans) alongside cash crops, chiefly cocoa, with groundnuts and small-scale ventures like oyster mushroom cultivation as supplementary income. Tombel has functioned historically as a hub for social and ethnic integration in the division, drawing settlers from across the Southwest and Northwest regions to farm its cocoa lands.
