Mamfe

South-West, Cameroon

Why visit Mamfe?

Mamfe is the capital of Manyu Division in the South-West Region, on the Manyu River (a tributary of the Cross River) about 74km from the Nigerian border, with a population estimated around 42,500. The area has long been home to the Bayang and Ejagham peoples, and Mamfe is a centre of traditional religion and medicine, notably the Obasinjom and Ekpe societies. The town's name is said to derive from a German colonial-era mishearing of a local Banyang phrase. A distinctive German colonial-era bridge crosses the Cross River at Mamfe.
