Batibo

Batibo is the capital of Batibo Subdivision in Momo Division, North-West Region, Cameroon, about 40 km (27 miles) southwest of Bamenda along the Bamenda–Mamfe road. It is the traditional seat of a Fondom founded in the 17th century and is the cultural and economic centre of the Moghamo-speaking people, part of the wider Widikum group. Population estimates vary widely (from roughly 20,000 in the town itself to over 70,000 across the wider area depending on the source), but Batibo is consistently described as the largest and most populous settlement in Momo Division. Batibo Subdivision was created in 1968 and Batibo Council in 1977. Since 2018 the area has seen episodes of conflict tied to Cameroon's Anglophone Crisis, including fighting along the Bamenda–Batibo highway; travellers should check the current security situation before planning road travel through the area.
