Why visit Sao Filipe?

São Filipe is the capital and largest city of the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Located on the southwest coast of the island, the city is built on high cliffs overlooking a long black-sand beach and the Atlantic Ocean, with views stretching to the neighboring island of Brava on clear days. São Filipe is widely considered one of the most picturesque cities in Cape Verde, famous for its beautifully preserved Portuguese colonial architecture.

The historic center, known as the Bila, is characterized by cobblestone streets and elegant colonial townhouses called sobrados. These two-story wooden-balconied homes were historically the residences of Portuguese landowners. Today, they give the city a unique, colorful charm. São Filipe serves as the cultural, economic, and administrative heart of Fogo, making it the primary hub for travelers exploring the island's volcanic landscapes.

The climate is tropical and arid, moderated by ocean breezes. The most comfortable time to visit is during the dry season from November to June, when temperatures are around 25°C to 28°C. The rainy season, from August to October, is short but can bring heavy tropical showers and warmer temperatures up to 30°C.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The city is served by São Filipe Airport (SFL), located just 2 km southeast of the city center. The airport operates regular domestic flights, mainly connecting Fogo to the capital city of Praia on Santiago Island and Sal Island. From SFL, a private taxi into the city center costs 500 CVE. Shared minibuses (aluguers) are also available outside the terminal for 100 CVE.

By Car / Road

São Filipe is connected to the island's port at Vale de Cavaleiros, located about 4 km north of the city, where ferries arrive from Praia and Brava. A private taxi from the port to the city center costs approximately 150 CVE.

For road travel within Fogo, a ring road encircles the island. Shared aluguers and private taxis depart from the area near the municipal market in São Filipe, linking the capital to outlying towns like Mosteiros and Cova Figueira, as well as the volcanic crater at Chã das Caldeiras.

São Filipe's historic center is highly compact and best explored on foot. Walking along the cobblestone streets allows visitors to easily admire the colonial sobrados, churches, and public plazas.

To visit other parts of the island, travelers can hire private taxis or use the local aluguer network. Aluguers depart from the terminal area near the municipal market, with fares generally between 100 and 500 CVE depending on the destination. Private tours of the island can be arranged through local guesthouses or directly with taxi drivers, with day rates typically starting around 5,000 to 7,000 CVE.
