Mosteiros
Ilhas de Sotavento, Cabo Verde
Why visit Mosteiros?
Mosteiros is a municipality and town located on the northeastern coast of Fogo Island, Cape Verde. Nestled on the humid, fertile slopes of the volcano, Mosteiros is the island's greenest region, standing in stark contrast to the arid landscapes of the capital, São Filipe, and the barren volcanic fields of Chã das Caldeiras. The administrative seat of the municipality is the town of Vila Igreja.
The character of Mosteiros is defined by its microclimate and agricultural heritage. Heavy moisture-laden trade winds hit the steep volcanic slopes here, creating frequent mists and a humid environment that supports lush vegetation. Mosteiros is famous as the coffee-growing capital of Cape Verde, where high-quality organic coffee (Café do Fogo) is cultivated in the volcanic soil. The region is also rich in citrus fruits, bananas, and papayas, grown on terraced hillsides.
The climate is tropical and humid. Thanks to the altitude and microclimate, Mosteiros is cooler and more humid than other parts of Fogo. The dry season runs from November to June, with comfortable temperatures averaging 22°C to 26°C. The rainy season, from August to October, brings heavier rain and dense fog, which feeds the lush forests and plantations on the mountain slopes.

By Plane
The nearest airport is São Filipe Airport (SFL), located approximately 40 km southwest of Mosteiros. The airport operates domestic flights connecting Fogo to Praia and Sal. A private taxi from the airport to Mosteiros costs about 3,500 to 4,000 CVE and takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. Alternatively, travelers can take a shared aluguer from São Filipe town center for a much lower cost.
By Car / Road
Mosteiros is accessible from São Filipe via the northern branch of the round-island highway. Renting a 4x4 vehicle or hiring a private taxi is a reliable way to travel, taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes over winding coastal roads.
Public transportation is served by shared minibuses (aluguers), which run regularly between São Filipe and Mosteiros throughout the day. Aluguers depart from near the municipal market in São Filipe. A one-way trip to Mosteiros costs approximately 300 to 400 CVE and takes about 1.5 hours, stopping in various villages along the coast.
Within the primary town center of Vila Igreja, the layout is compact, and all points of interest, restaurants, and guesthouses are easily reachable on foot.
To explore the surrounding agricultural valleys and mountain forests, travelers can use local aluguers that connect Vila Igreja with uphill communities like Pai António. Fares are typically between 50 and 100 CVE. For longer excursions, such as reaching the trailheads for volcano hikes, private taxis can be hired in the town center, though fares must be negotiated beforehand as they do not use meters.
