Pedra Badejo
Ilhas de Sotavento, Cabo Verde
Why visit Pedra Badejo?
Pedra Badejo is a peaceful coastal town located on the northeastern coast of Santiago Island, Cabo Verde, about 25 km north of the capital, Praia. It serves as the seat of the Santa Cruz municipality and is the center of one of the island's most important agricultural regions. Nestled between dry volcanic hills and the Atlantic Ocean, the town is surrounded by fertile valleys that grow bananas, papayas, sugarcane, and coconuts.
With a population of around 10,000, Pedra Badejo retains the character of a traditional Cape Verdean working fishing community. It is far less commercialized than the tourist hotspots, offering visitors a genuine glimpse into the daily life, music, and culture of the island. The climate is warm and dry year-round, typical of the coast of Santiago, with the surrounding valleys remaining relatively green due to groundwater irrigation. The town layout is straightforward, stretching along the main coastal highway and down to the fishing harbor and black-sand beaches.
