Muramvya is a small, landlocked province in central Burundi, situated on the central plateau at an elevation of roughly 1,800 m. It is one of Burundi's smallest provinces, created in 2015 when it was split off from the larger Muramvya Province. The capital, also called Muramvya, sits in a valley surrounded by the rolling hills characteristic of central Burundi, with terraced agriculture covering the slopes.
The province is predominantly rural and agricultural, with its economy centred on coffee, bananas, beans, and sweet potatoes. Muramvya has no major cities or tourist infrastructure, but its tranquil hills and traditional way of life offer an authentic glimpse of rural Burundi for the most adventurous travellers. The province is quiet and little visited, appealing primarily to those seeking to experience everyday Burundian life away from any beaten path.
When is the best time to visit?
Muramvya follows the same climatic pattern as the rest of the central Burundian plateau. The best time to visit is during the long dry season from June to August, when the hills are green from the preceding rains but the roads are passable. The short dry season in December–January is another window, though slightly less reliable. The long rains from February to May can make unpaved roads difficult.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Muramvya province is compact, and the town of Muramvya serves as the transport hub. Minibuses and shared taxis connect Muramvya with Gitega (about 30 km east) and Bujumbura (about 60 km south-west). Within the province, motorcycle taxis (motos) are the most practical way to reach the smaller communes of Bukeye, Kiganda, Mbuye, and Rutegama. Roads are mostly unpaved.
Where should you go?
- Muramvya — The provincial capital and main market town, a quiet highland settlement surrounded by agricultural hills
- Bukeye — A small commune west of the capital, known for its rural markets and coffee-growing areas
- Kiganda — A hillside commune east of Muramvya, offering views of the surrounding valleys
- Mbuye — A rural commune south of Muramvya, typical of the province's agricultural landscape
- Rutegama — A commune north of the capital, the most remote of the province's settlements

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Muramvya's food is typical of central Burundi: beans, bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, and occasionally grilled goat or fish. The province's coffee plantations produce some of Burundi's best arabica beans. Banana beer (mwarwaro) is brewed locally and available at roadside stalls. There are no formal restaurants of note; visitors eat at market stalls or simple local eateries in Muramvya town.
What is the culture like?
Muramvya's cultural traditions are those of Burundi's central highland communities — drumming, dance, and agricultural festivals tied to the coffee and bean harvests. The province does not host any major nationally recognised festivals, but local celebrations accompany Independence Day (1 July) and religious holidays. The area is known for its traditional pottery and basket-weaving.
