Momchilgrad (Bulgarian: Момчилград, Turkish: Mestanlı) is a town in the very south of Bulgaria, part of Kardzhali Province in the Eastern Rhodopes. Named after the medieval Bulgarian brigand and ruler Momchil, it has a population of about 7,800 and is the largest Bulgarian settlement with a Turkish majority (75%). Notable natives include swimmer Petar Stoychev and weightlifter Naim Süleymanoğlu.

By Plane

The nearest airports are Plovdiv (about 130 km north) and Sofia (about 270 km northwest).

By Train

The nearest railway station is in Kardzhali, about 20 km north, with regular services to Plovdiv and Sofia.

By Car / Road

Momchilgrad lies on the main road connecting Kardzhali to the Greek border at Makaza. It is about 20 km south of Kardzhali and 15 km from the border.

The town centre of Momchilgrad is compact and walkable. Local buses and minibuses connect the town with nearby villages. Taxis are available from the town square.

The town square features a monument to Momchil. The surrounding Eastern Rhodopes landscape offers scenic views. The nearby village of Raven has remains of medieval fortifications.
