Why visit Dzhebel?

Dzhebel (Bulgarian: Джебел) is a town in Kardzhali Province, southern Bulgaria, with a population of about 3,300. The name derives from the Arabic word "jabal" meaning "mountain", reflecting its location in the Eastern Rhodopes. The town is the administrative centre of Dzhebel Municipality, which encompasses 47 villages with a total population of about 9,000. The municipality is predominantly populated by ethnic Turks (over 75%). Formerly known as Şeyhcuma during Ottoman rule, the town was renamed Dzhebel in the early 20th century.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airports are Plovdiv (about 100 km) and Sofia (about 260 km). Kardzhali has a small airfield for general aviation.

By Train

Dzhebel does not have a railway station. The nearest railway station is in Kardzhali (about 20 km), with regular bus connections.

By Car / Road

Dzhebel is about 20 km southwest of Kardzhali via road III-509. The drive from Kardzhali takes about 25 minutes. The road continues through the Rhodopes towards Ardino and Smolyan.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Taxis are available for trips to the surrounding villages. A car is useful for exploring the Rhodope mountain scenery and the many small settlements in the municipality.
