Chernoochene
Kardzhali, Bulgaria
Why visit Chernoochene?
Chernoochene is a small village in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, at an elevation of about 564 m, and the administrative centre of Chernoochene Municipality — the northernmost part of Kardzhali Province, covering roughly 339 km² and made up of 51 mostly small settlements. As of the 2008 count the village itself had around 335 residents. The municipality has an overwhelmingly ethnic Turkish and Muslim population — among the highest shares of both in Bulgaria — and the village's Bulgarian name (meaning roughly "place of the black-eyed people") has a direct Turkish equivalent, Karagözler.
This is a rural administrative hub rather than a tourist destination in its own right: it has no significant sourced tourist infrastructure, and its main visible landmark is the village mosque.
