Why visit Ardino?

Ardino (Bulgarian: Ардино) is a town in Kardzhali Province in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria. It has a population of about 4,100 and is the administrative centre of Ardino Municipality. The town is known for its textile industry, machine-building, and tobacco manufacturing. It lies at an elevation of 684 m and is surrounded by forested hills. During Ottoman rule it was known as Eğridere and was a kaza centre in the Sanjak of Gümülcine. The town was renamed Ardino in 1934 and declared a town in 1960. It is the birthplace of the famous Turkish novelist and poet Sabahattin Ali.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airports are Plovdiv (about 100 km) and Sofia (about 260 km). Both offer domestic and international flights.

By Train

Ardino has no railway station. The nearest station is in Kardzhali (about 30 km), with connecting buses running several times daily.

By Car / Road

Ardino is reached via secondary roads from Kardzhali (about 30 km east) and Smolyan (about 40 km west). The route from Kardzhali follows the Arda river valley and takes about 40 minutes.

The town is compact and walkable. Taxis are available for excursions to the Devil's Bridge, Belite Brezi, and surrounding villages. A car is useful for exploring the Rhodope countryside.

What are the things to do?

  • Dyavolski most (Devil's Bridge) — a striking 16th-century Ottoman stone bridge over the Arda river, about 10 km from Ardino. The three-arched bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Rhodopes.

  • Belite Brezi (White Birches) — a scenic area of birch forest and open meadows, popular for picnics and hiking.

  • Orlovi Skali (Eagle Rocks) — a rock formation and historic site near Ardino, offering panoramic views.

  • Sabahattin Ali Museum — a small house museum dedicated to the Turkish novelist born in Ardino.

  • Main square — featuring the town's clock tower and a monument to local history.

  • Hiking — trails lead from Ardino to the Devil's Bridge, Belite Brezi, and Orlovi Skali. The area is part of the Rhodope hiking network.

  • Photography — the bridge, birch forest, and mountain landscapes provide excellent subjects.

  • Fishing — the Arda river and nearby streams are popular for trout fishing.
