Shakawe

Shakawe is a town in the North West District of Botswana, located on the Okavango River near the Namibian border at the upper end of the Okavango Panhandle. It is the main service centre for the northern Okavango region and a gateway to the delta's waterways. The population is around 7,000, primarily Bayei and Hambukushu people. The town has a relaxed riverside atmosphere and is known for its excellent fishing, birdwatching, and access to remote delta camps.

By Plane

Shakawe has an airstrip for charter flights from Maun. Scheduled flights are limited.

By Car / Road

Shakawe is 230 km north-west of Maun on a paved road (3 hours). The Mohembo border post at Shakawe provides access to Namibia's Caprivi Strip.

Shakawe is walkable in the centre. Boats are the main form of transport for reaching delta camps.
