Gabane

Kweneng, Botswana

Why visit Gabane?

Gabane is a village in the Kweneng District of Botswana, about 15 km west of the capital, Gaborone. It has grown rapidly as a commuter settlement for people working in the capital: the population rose from roughly 10,400 at the 2001 census to about 14,800 in 2011 and over 20,000 in the 2022 census, making it one of the larger settlements in Kweneng. New housing has changed its character from a traditional village toward a suburban commuter town. Gabane is nationally known for pottery — Gabane Pottery (formerly Pelegano Village Industries) is a long-running cooperative producing hand-thrown ceramic pots, mugs, and flowerware, reviving traditional Southern African decorative patterns; it sells to local buyers, hotels, and visitors, and has drawn national media coverage for keeping the craft alive.
