Cove
Zou, Benin
Why visit Cove?
Covè is a town, arrondissement, and commune in Zou Department, roughly 40 km east of Abomey in the Agonlin area. Its name means "red earth" in the local Mahi language. The commune covers about 525 km² and had a population of around 51,000 at the 2012 census (density roughly 98/km²). It sits on a plateau of 60–100 m altitude crossed by the Zou River and its tributaries; the climate is transitional between sub-equatorial and humid tropical, with two rainy and two dry seasons. Ethnic groups present include Mahi, Fon, Adja, and Yoruba/Nago, with Mahi, Fon (Gbé), and Yoruba/Nago spoken alongside French. The commune is administratively divided into eight arrondissements with around 40 villages and city quarters. Covè is known locally for several natural thermal water sources — including Towé, Loto, Kété, Laha, Wassa, Wanté, and Fionzoun — that drain into the Zou River, for the sacred forest of Kponzoun, and for the palace of King Agolin Zéhé. It also has ties to the Yoruba-Nago community's Guèlèdè masked festival, a celebration (recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage across the Yoruba-speaking region) held around harvest time or for important births and marriages, with songs in Yoruba, drumming, and masked dances.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Covè is reached by road from Bohicon, the department's main transport hub, and from Abomey (about 40 km west). Shared bush taxis and zemidjan (motorcycle taxis) cover the route; schedules and fares are informal and not centrally published.
Walking within town; shared taxi or motorcycle for the outlying thermal springs and villages.
What are the things to do?
- Thermal springs — Several natural warm-water sources locally known as Towé, Loto, Kété, Laha, Wassa, Wanté, and Fionzoun feed into the Zou River.
- Sacred forest of Kponzoun — A forest held sacred by the local community.
- Palace of King Agolin Zéhé — A local royal residence tied to Covè's history.
Visiting the thermal springs and, if timed right, attending a Guèlèdè masked ceremony organized by the Yoruba-Nago community are the town's distinctive draws; otherwise, market days and walks through the surrounding villages are the norm for a town this size.
