Why visit Agbangnizoun?
Agbangnizoun is a town, arrondissement, and commune in Zou Department, about 20 km southeast of Abomey. The commune covers roughly 244 km² and had about 55,000 residents at the 2002 census. Its name derives from "Agbanlin zounmè," meaning "forest of antelopes" in the local language, a reference to the antelope populations that once inhabited this wooded area near the Couffo River. It is bounded by Abomey and Djidja to the north, Bohicon and Zogbodomey to the east, Couffo Department to the south, and Klouékanmè to the west. The commune is divided into 10 arrondissements — Agbangnizoun, Adanhoundjigon, Adingnigon, Kinta, Lissazounmè, Sahè, Siwé-Kpota, Siwé-Légo, Tanvé, and Zoungoudo — containing 45 villages and 7 city districts. Agbangnizoun has historical ties to the Kingdom of Abomey: the town hosted annexe (secondary) palaces of Kings Guézo (r. 1818–1858) and Glèlè (r. 1858–1889), and royal court dances and rhythms are still passed down locally. Most residents farm; trade, transport, and handicrafts follow.

Walking. The town is compact, and most arrondissement centres are reached by shared taxi or motorcycle.
What are the things to do?
The commune's historical interest lies in its former annexe palaces of Kings Guézo and Glèlè, part of the wider network of secondary Dahomey royal residences, and in the agricultural landscape that gave the town its "forest of antelopes" name.
Village walks through the surrounding farmland and arrondissements, and visiting on a weekly market day, are the main activities for a compact rural commune like this.
