About Vitsebsk

Vitsebsk (Віцебск), also known as Vitebsk, is one of the most important cultural centres of Belarus, with about 378,000 inhabitants. Founded in 974 on the banks of the Daugava River, it was a key city of the Principality of Polotsk and later the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Vitsebsk is the birthplace of the world-famous avant-garde artist Marc Chagall (1887–1985) and is home to the Marc Chagall Museum, as well as the annual Slavianski Bazaar International Arts Festival. The city has a beautifully restored historic centre with 19th-century merchant houses, a magnificent town hall, and a network of rivers and canals. The climate is continental: warm summers (18–24°C) and cold winters (−5 to −10°C).
