Polatsk

Viciebskaja voblasć, Belarus

Why visit Polatsk?

Polatsk (Полацк) is the oldest city in Belarus, with a history stretching back to 862 AD — predating Minsk and even Moscow. Located on the Daugava River in Viciebskaja voblasć, Polatsk was the capital of the powerful Principality of Polotsk in medieval times. It is home to the magnificent St. Sophia Cathedral (Сафійскі сабор), one of the earliest stone churches in Eastern Europe (1044–1066). The city is a treasure trove of ancient architecture, with 12th-century churches, Baroque monasteries, and a rich cultural heritage as the birthplace of the Belarusian alphabet pioneer Francysk Skaryna. The climate is continental: warm summers (18–24°C) and cold winters (−5 to −10°C).
