Orsha

Viciebskaja voblasć, Belarus

Why visit Orsha?

Orsha (Орша) is one of the most historic cities in Belarus, with about 115,000 inhabitants in Viciebskaja voblasć, located on the Dnieper River. First mentioned in 1067, Orsha was a key fortress and trading centre on the route from the Varangians to the Greeks. It was the site of the 1514 Battle of Orsha, one of the greatest victories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania over Muscovy. The city boasts a well-preserved historic centre with a 17th-century Jesuit college, Baroque churches, and a medieval castle site. The Dnieper River embankment is a beautiful focal point. The climate is continental: warm summers (18–24°C) and cold winters (−5 to −10°C).
