Zaqatala is a town and administrative rayon center in northwestern Azerbaijan, situated on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountain range at an elevation of 600 meters along the Tala River. Located near the Georgian border, the town has a population of approximately 32,000 residents and serves as an agricultural hub known across Azerbaijan for hazelnut farming, persimmons, tea production, and rose-water distillation.
Travelers visit Zaqatala for mountain trekking in the Zaqatala State Nature Reserve, exploring 19th-century Russian fortifications, and sampling North Caucasian culinary traditions. The district includes 26 ethnic communities—such as Avar, Tsakhur, Lezgin, and Georgian groups—whose traditions are reflected in regional dishes like suhulu and girs.
Zaqatala experiences a humid subtropical mountain climate. Summers (June to August) are warm with average daytime temperatures between 28°C and 34°C (82°F–93°F). Winters (December to February) bring cold air and snow, with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 6°C (28°F–43°F) and average snow cover of 50 to 60 cm. Spring (March to May) is the wettest period, recording heavy rainfall (annual total around 1,200 mm), while autumn (September to November) brings clear skies and temperatures around 14°C to 22°C (57°F–72°F).
When is the best time to visit?
The primary travel period runs from June to September. Summer daytime temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F–90°F), hiking trails into the Greater Caucasus are accessible, and mountain passes remain free of snow.
Spring (April to May) brings frequent heavy rainfall that renders mountain trails muddy and difficult to traverse. Autumn (October to November) brings drier weather with daytime temperatures from 12°C to 20°C (54°F–68°F) and changing colors across the beech and oak forests. Winter (December to February) sees daytime temperatures from -2°C to 5°C (28°F–41°F); heavy snowfall limits mountain trekking, though lower-elevation town walking remains open.
