Lerik Rayon is a mountainous district in southern Azerbaijan, in the Talysh Mountains near the Iranian border. The landscape is dramatic — steep forested valleys, rushing rivers, and high ridges rising to over 2,000 m. The district is one of the most remote and least developed in Azerbaijan, offering pristine nature, clean mountain air, and a pace of life that has changed little in generations.
The district capital, Lerik, sits in a valley at around 1,000 m elevation, surrounded by dense forest. The wider district includes remote mountain villages accessible only by winding roads. The Talysh Mountains here receive some of the highest rainfall in Azerbaijan, supporting lush forests of beech, chestnut, and ironwood. The area is known for the longevity of its residents — Lerik has been cited as one of the world's "blue zones" where people live exceptionally long lives.
Climate is cool and wet: summers are mild (18–25 °C), winters are cold (−5 to 3 °C) with snow at higher elevations. Rainfall is heavy, especially in autumn and winter.
When to Visit
June through September is the best window, with warm days and accessible roads. Spring (May–June) brings wildflowers and green forests. Autumn (September–October) offers golden foliage but rain increases. Winter brings snow and road closures at higher elevations.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Lerik is 290 km south of Baku (4 hours) via Lənkəran and the M3 highway, then a mountain road. Regular buses connect to Lənkəran (60 km, 1.5 hours). From Lənkəran, taxis reach Lerik in about an hour. Within the rayon, local minibuses are infrequent. A private car or taxi is essential — 5–15 AZN within the district. Mountain roads are paved but narrow and winding.

WhatsAppCuisine
Lerik's cuisine is rooted in its mountain environment. Fresh herbs — tarragon, mint, cilantro — grow wild and feature in every meal. Ləvəngi (walnut-stuffed dishes) is a regional specialty. Fresh trout from mountain streams is grilled over open fires. Honey from forest apiaries is a prized product. Dried fruits and nuts are pantry staples. Meals are simple but hearty — expect 5–10 AZN at guest houses and tea houses.
Culture & Festivals
The district preserves Talysh mountain traditions more purely than the lowlands. The Talysh language is widely spoken. Novruz is celebrated with local mountain customs. The longevity of residents is a source of local pride and cultural identity. Traditional crafts include woodcarving and wool-spinning.
