Alkhanli

Füzuli, Azerbaijan

Why visit Alkhanli?

Alxanlı (also transliterated Alkhanli, Alikhanly) is a village and municipality in the Füzuli (Fuzuli) District of south-western Azerbaijan, on the plain near the Aras/Araz River, with a population of a little over 2,000. It has a difficult modern history: in August 1993, during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Armenian forces occupied and razed the village and its residents fled, but Azerbaijani forces recaptured it in January 1994. For more than two decades afterward the village sat directly on or near the Nagorno-Karabakh line of contact — the rest of Füzuli District, including the district capital, remained under Armenian-backed occupation until it was retaken by Azerbaijan in October 2020, during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. In the interim, Alxanlı itself came under repeated cross-line shelling, most notably a July 2017 mortar attack that killed two civilian residents and drew international condemnation. Since the district's full liberation in 2020, Füzuli has been undergoing large-scale, state-led reconstruction — including the new Fuzuli International Airport and rebuilt regional highways — and a formal government "Great Return" resettlement program has been bringing displaced families back to district towns since 2023. Given this recent and still-active reconstruction, visitor infrastructure in and around Alxanlı specifically remains minimal to nonexistent.
