Why visit?

Füzuli Rayon is a district in south-western Azerbaijan, on the Kura-Araz lowland near the Iranian border. Like neighbouring Cəbrayıl, Füzuli was occupied by Armenian forces during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict (1993–2020) and was recovered by Azerbaijan in the 2020 war. The district is now undergoing large-scale reconstruction, with new infrastructure, housing, and a newly built international airport transforming the landscape.

The district capital, Füzuli, was largely destroyed during the conflict and is being rebuilt as a model city. Horadiz, the second major town, served as the frontline settlement for decades and has a more established population and infrastructure. The surrounding lowland is agricultural — wheat, cotton, and livestock — though much farmland is being cleared of mines and returned to production.

Füzuli has gained national and international significance as the site of the Füzuli International Airport, opened in 2021, which serves as a gateway to the recovered Karabakh region. The district represents Azerbaijan's post-conflict reconstruction ambitions.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best seasons, with comfortable temperatures (15–25 °C). Summer is hot (32–38 °C). Winter is mild (1–8 °C) but can be damp. Access to some areas may be restricted due to ongoing demining; check current conditions. Victory Day (8 November) celebrations are a significant national event.

How do you get around?

Füzuli International Airport (FZL) opened in 2021 and handles domestic flights from Baku (approximately 1 hour). The M6 highway connects Füzuli to Baku (300 km, 3.5 hours) and to other Karabakh districts. Within the rayon, roads are being rebuilt; a private car or taxi is essential. Horadiz is the transport hub, with bus connections to regional centres. The Horadiz–Zəngilan railway is under reconstruction.

Where should you go?

  • Fuzuli — the district capital, being rebuilt from near-total destruction; home to the new international airport and modern infrastructure
  • Horadiz — the frontline town during the conflict, now a busy settlement with markets, services, and a population that lived under shelling for decades
  • Qarakhanbayli — a village undergoing reconstruction and resettlement
  • Alkhanli — a settlement near the former frontline, with memorial significance

What should you eat?

Dining options are limited due to ongoing reconstruction. Horadiz has several restaurants serving traditional Azerbaijani fare — plov, kebabs, dolma (5–10 AZN per meal). Fresh agricultural produce from the recovering lowlands is appearing in local markets. Visitors to Füzuli city should plan meals in Horadiz or bring provisions. Tea houses in Horadiz serve tea with sweets and bread.

What is the culture like?

Füzuli's cultural life is defined by the experience of displacement and return. Victory Day (8 November) is the district's most significant date, marking the 2020 liberation. Novruz celebrations are being revived as communities re-establish themselves. Memorial events honour the displaced and fallen. Traditional music and dance are returning as cultural infrastructure is rebuilt.
