Qushchu

Daşkəsən, Azerbaijan

Why visit Qushchu?

Quşçu (also transliterated Qushchu, or Gushchu) is a village and municipality in the Daşkəsən District of western Azerbaijan, in the Lesser Caucasus mountains, with a population of roughly 2,000. The name is connected to the Azerbaijani word for "bird"/"falconer." Like its neighbour Bayan, Quşçu had an Armenian population — recorded historically under the Armenian name Khachakap (Խաչակապ) — before the exodus of Armenians from Azerbaijan that followed the outbreak of the First Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the early 1990s. It is now a quiet, ethnically Azerbaijani highland village typical of this mining-district region.
