Why visit?

Beyləqan Rayon is a lowland district in south-central Azerbaijan, situated on the Kura-Araz lowland between the Kura and Araz rivers. The landscape is flat and predominantly agricultural — vast wheat and cotton fields, melon patches, and sunflower plantations stretch to the horizon. The district has a quiet, rural character, with the town of Beyləqan as its administrative and commercial centre.

Beyləqan has historical significance as the site of the medieval city of Beyləqan (also known as Paytakaran), which was a major trading centre on the Silk Road before being destroyed by earthquakes and invasions. Archaeological remains exist outside the modern town, though they are not well developed for tourism. The modern district is focused on agriculture and animal husbandry, with limited tourist infrastructure.

The climate is semi-arid continental: hot summers (33–40 °C), mild winters (1–8 °C), and low rainfall. The flat terrain and open landscapes give the district a sense of vastness, particularly at dawn and dusk when the light is dramatic.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (March–May) is the best season, when fields are green, temperatures are pleasant (15–25 °C), and the landscape is at its most attractive. Autumn (September–October) is also comfortable. Summer is extremely hot and best avoided for outdoor activities. Winter is cold but dry. Novruz celebrations in late March are a highlight.

How do you get around?

Beyləqan town is connected to Baku (300 km east, 4 hours) and other regional centres by the M6 highway and regular bus services. The nearest railway station is at nearby Horadiz (20 km south-west), on the line from Baku to the southern border. Within the rayon, local minibuses connect the town to villages. Taxis are the most practical way to reach outlying areas — 5–10 AZN for trips within the district. Roads are mostly paved.

Where should you go?

  • Beylagan — the district capital, a small town with a central bazaar, Soviet-era architecture, and a gateway to the surrounding agricultural lowland
  • Yenikand — a traditional village with a strong farming community and well-maintained irrigation channels
  • Birinci Ashiqli — a quiet lowland settlement known for its rural character and surrounding melon fields

What should you eat?

Beyləqan's cuisine is rooted in its agricultural produce. Fresh melons (qarpız and xıyar) from the district's famous melon fields are a summer highlight. Plov, kebabs, and dolma are the staples, prepared with locally grown herbs and vegetables. Qovurma (preserved lamb) is a traditional specialty. The bazaar sells fresh bread, dairy products, and seasonal fruits. Tea is the universal drink, served with local sweets. Meals in local eateries cost 5–8 AZN.

What is the culture like?

Novruz (around 21 March) is the main cultural event, celebrated with bonfires, sweets, and community gatherings. The district's agricultural calendar drives much of its social life — planting in spring, harvesting in summer and autumn. Wedding celebrations are elaborate multi-day affairs with traditional music and dance. Ashiq bards perform in tea houses, and the local carpet-weaving tradition, while diminished, still persists in some families.
