Photography coming soonOverview
Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) is the fourth-largest Austrian state by area and third-most-populous (1.5 million), stretching from the Danube River and the Bohemian Massif in the north to the Salzkammergut lake district and the Dachstein mountains in the south. Its capital, Linz, is the country's third-largest city and an industrial powerhouse with a vibrant contemporary arts scene.
The state's identity is shaped by the Danube corridor — Linz, Enns (Austria's oldest city), and the Renaissance town of Grein — and by the Alpine lake paradise of the Salzkammergut, where Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, and Gmunden sit on crystal-clear lakes beneath the Dachstein glacier. To the north, the Mühlviertel offers rolling hills, granite outcrops, and quiet medieval towns like Freistadt. Oberösterreich is also the homeland of Anton Bruckner and the spiritual birthplace of the Christmas carol "Silent Night."
When to Visit
The Salzkammergut peaks in July–August when the lakes reach 22–24°C and the Hallstatt-Dachstein region sees its heaviest crowds. May–June and September are quieter with mild weather perfect for hiking and cycling. Winter (December–March) brings skiing to the Dachstein glacier, the Hinterstoder ski area, and cross-country in the Mühlviertel. The Linz Klangwolke (September) and the Brucknerfest (September–October) are cultural highlights.

WhatsAppGetting Around
ÖBB's Westbahn line runs through Linz connecting to Vienna (1 hr 20 min), Salzburg (1 hr), and Munich (2.5 hr). Regional trains serve Gmunden, Bad Ischl, and Attnang-Puchheim (the main Salzkammergut junction). The Salzkammergut is best explored by car — the B145 and B166 link the lakes. Ferries cross the Traunsee and Hallstätter See seasonally. The narrow-gauge Schafbergbahn and Feuerkogel cable car provide mountain access.
