Overview

Kärnten (Carinthia) is Austria's southernmost state, a sun-drenched Alpine region known for its warm lakes, medieval towns, and the dramatic peaks of the Hohe Tauern and Nockberge mountain ranges. Bordered by Italy and Slovenia to the south, Kärnten enjoys more sunny days than any other Austrian state — its lakes (Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See) warm to a swimmable 25°C in summer, earning it the nickname "the Austrian Riviera."

The state capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee anchors a region of contrasts: the glacial amphitheatre of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the ski slopes of Bad Kleinkirchheim and Nassfeld, the Romanesque-Gothic architecture of Gurk Cathedral, and the Nockberge Biosphere Park's rolling alpine pastures. Kärnten's Slovene minority (concentrated around the Jauntal valley) adds a Slavic thread to its Germanic-Austrian cultural fabric, visible in bilingual road signs, traditional costumes, and the passion for harmonica-driven folk music.

When to Visit

Summer (June–September) is peak season, when the lakes reach 24–26°C and the region hosts its famous lake festivals — the Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt (July) and the Wörthersee Classics vintage car rally (May). July and August are the busiest; book lakefront accommodation well ahead.

Winter (December–March) brings reliable skiing above 1,500 m at Nassfeld, Bad Kleinkirchheim (a World Cup downhill venue), and the Mölltal Glacier. Spring (April–May) and autumn (October) are quieter and ideal for hiking, cycling around the lakes, and wine tasting in the Klagenfurt basin, where the mild south-Alpine climate produces notable Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Getting Around

The main rail corridor (ÖBB Südbahn) runs through Villach and Klagenfurt, connecting to Vienna (4 hr), Salzburg (2.5 hr), and Graz (2 hr). Regional trains (S-Bahn Kärnten) serve the major lake towns and valleys. A car is the most flexible option for reaching the mountain resorts and national parks — the A2 Süd Autobahn runs through the state, and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a toll road (€41 per car in 2025). Buses fill gaps in the Lienz-Villach and Klagenfurt-Wolfsberg routes. The Villach–Nassfeld ski bus runs December–March.

Cuisine

Kärnten's cuisine reflects its Alpine-Slavic borderland position. Signature dishes include Kärntner Kasnudeln (pasta pockets filled with curd cheese, mint, and potatoes — boiled and served with browned butter), Reindling (a yeasted swirl cake filled with cinnamon, sugar, and raisins, baked in a clay pot), and Kirchtagssuppe (a hearty festival soup of beef, root vegetables, and liver dumplings). The Klagenfurt basin produces notable wines, while Villach's Friday fish markets offer fresh trout from the region's lakes. For dessert, try Kärntner Ofensulz, a sweet bread-and-butter pudding with raisins and cinnamon.
