Overview

Steiermark (Styria) is Austria's second-largest federal state by area, covering 16,400 km² in the southeast of the country. With a population of roughly 1.25 million, it is one of Austria's most geographically diverse regions, stretching from the alpine peaks of the Dachstein massif and the Niedere Tauern in the northwest to the rolling hills and thermal springs of the Südsteirisches Hügelland (South Styrian Hills) in the south. The state capital Graz, Austria's second-largest city (population ~300,000), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was European Capital of Culture in 2003.

Styria is defined by contrasts: the industrial Mur-Mürz valley (historically Austria's steel heartland) sits alongside pristine alpine landscapes, vineyards, and pumpkin fields. The state is often called the "Green Mark" (Grüne Mark) for its extensive forests, which cover nearly two-thirds of its territory. The Mur, Enns, and Mürz rivers carve through its valleys, and the Dachstein glacier (2,995 m) marks its northwest boundary. Styria's cultural identity blends alpine traditions with a touch of Mediterranean influence from the south — South Styria's wine country, with its rolling vineyards, has been likened to Tuscany.

When to Visit

May–September is the prime season for hiking, cycling, and wine touring. July and August are warmest (highs 24–28 °C in the lowlands, cooler at altitude), with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. October brings wine harvest festivals and autumn foliage. December–March is ski season in the Schladming-Dachstein and Tauplitzalm areas. September–October is ideal for the South Styrian wine road. Major events include the Styriarte classical music festival (June/July, Graz), the La Strada street theatre festival (July/August, Graz), and the Aufsteirern folk culture festival (September, Graz). Winters can be cold and foggy in the lowland basins (Graz: −2 to 3 °C in January), while the alpine northwest sees heavy snow.

Getting Around

Graz is the central transport hub. ÖBB trains connect Graz to all major Styrian towns: Leoben (45 min), Bruck an der Mur (50 min), Schladming (1.5 hours), and Leibnitz (30 min). The S-Bahn Steiermark network radiates from Graz to surrounding towns. Postbus services reach villages not on the rail network, though frequencies drop on weekends. Distances: Graz to Schladming is approximately 100 km (~1.5 hours by car via the A9); Graz to Leoben is 60 km (~45 min); Graz to the South Styrian wine road is 40–60 km (~45 min). A car is recommended for exploring the South Styrian Hills, the Ennstal, and remote alpine valleys.

Cuisine

Styria is one of Austria's most celebrated culinary regions. Styrian pumpkin seed oil (Kernöl) — a dark green, nutty oil — is the state's signature product, drizzled over salads, soups, and even ice cream. The Backhendl (fried chicken) is a Styrian institution. Other specialities include Sterz (a buckwheat or corn dish), Steirisches Wurzelfleisch (pork belly with pumpkin seed oil), Verhackert (smoked minced pork spread), and Käferbohnensalat (scarlet runner bean salad). The South Styrian wine road produces excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, and Muskateller wines. The Buschenschank (wine tavern) tradition — where vintners serve their own wine with cold platters — is a must-experience. For fine dining, Graz has multiple award-winning restaurants. Vegetarian options are common; Styria's abundant vegetables and dairy make it relatively vegetarian-friendly.

Culture & Festivals

Styria has a rich cultural calendar. The Styriarte (June–July, Graz) is a major classical music festival founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. La Strada (July–August, Graz) brings international street theatre to the city's streets. Aufsteirern (September, Graz) is a large folk culture festival celebrating Styrian traditions, music, and dance. The Steirischer Herbst (Styrian Autumn, September–October) is a contemporary art festival with exhibitions and performances across Graz. Eggenberg Palace in Graz hosts concerts and exhibitions year-round. The Narzissenfest (daffodil festival) in Bad Aussee (late May) features elaborate flower floats. Styrian folk traditions include Schuhplattler dancing, Stubenmusik (parlour music), and a strong pumpkin seed oil culture that extends to cosmetics and wellness products.
