Why visit Butrint National Park?

Butrint National Park (Parku Kombëtar i Butrintit) is a vast archaeological and ecological reserve in southern Albania, situated in Vlorë County. It is located on a wooded peninsula between the Vivari Channel and Lake Butrint, just 18 km south of Sarandë and a stone's throw from the Greek border. Spanning over 9,400 hectares, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological destinations in the Balkans, representing over 2,500 years of continuous human habitation.

The site was founded around the 7th century BC as a sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. It subsequently grew into a major Hellenistic trading center and later a prosperous Roman colony under Julius Caesar and Augustus. Over the centuries, it was occupied and fortified by the Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman Empires before falling into decline and being abandoned. The archaeological park is surrounded by a rich natural environment of Mediterranean forests, wetlands, and salt marshes, making it a Ramsar wetland site of international importance.

The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The site is open year-round, but spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to explore the extensive ruins.
