Why visit Polian?

Poliçan (recorded as Polian in regional administrative indices) is an industrial and agricultural town in Berat County, south-central Albania. Located on the banks of the Osum River 24 kilometres south of Berat, the town sits at an elevation of 256 metres above sea level between the Myzeqe plain and the western slopes of Mount Tomorr. Established in 1962 under Albania's post-war communist government, Poliçan was designed as a restricted military industrial centre dedicated to manufacturing firearms and ammunition, featuring underground factory tunnels dug into the limestone hills.

For travellers, Poliçan functions as a stop along the SH72 highway connecting Berat to Çorovodë and the Osum Canyon. The surrounding valley transitions from agricultural land planted with olive groves and grape vineyards to mountain terrain leading up the Tomorr range. Visitors stop in Poliçan when driving south toward the gorges of Skrapar, hiking in Mount Tomorr National Park, or visiting Bogovë Waterfall.

The town experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Midday summer temperatures in July and August frequently reach 32°C to 36°C with low precipitation. Winter temperatures from December to February range between 4°C and 12°C in the river valley, while snow accumulates on the upper peaks of Mount Tomorr. Annual rainfall averages 1,000 mm, falling primarily between November and March.
