Kucove
Berat, Albania
Why visit Kucove?
Kuçovë is a small industrial town in Berat County, central Albania, about 16 km north-east of Berat on the plain between the Osum and Devoll rivers. Founded as a workers' settlement around the oilfield discovered here in the 1920s, it was renamed Qyteti Stalin ("Stalin City") in 1949 under the communist regime and reverted to Kuçovë in 1990. Today it has a population of roughly 30,000 and is one of three pillars of Albania's oil industry alongside Patos and Ballsh.
For travellers, Kuçovë is a niche stop rather than a destination — its appeal lies in 20th-century communist-era heritage: socialist-realist architecture, the disused Soviet-built military airbase (currently being redeveloped by NATO), and the oil-town atmosphere. It pairs naturally with a Berat trip for visitors interested in Albania's recent history.
The climate matches central Albania's plain — hot dry summers, mild damp winters. Visit April–June or September–October.

What are the things to do?
Kuçovë Air Base (Kuçova / Qyteti Stalin Airbase) — a Cold-War-era Soviet-built MiG base on the edge of town, being redeveloped as NATO's first tactical air base in the Western Balkans. The perimeter and exterior are visible from the road; the base itself is not open to the public.
Socialist-era town centre — the main square and surrounding apartment blocks retain a strong socialist-realist character.
Oil derricks of the Kuçovë field — pump-jacks dot the surrounding plain, a reminder of the town's industrial reason for being.
Kuçovë Ethnographic Museum — small local museum on town and oil history.
Mosque of Kuçovë — modest 20th-century mosque in the centre.
Half-day communist-heritage drive combining Kuçovë's town centre, the airbase perimeter, and the Patos oilfields just south.
Walk the oil plain at sunrise for photography of working pump-jacks.
organised tours starting in Kuçovë itself are rare; most visitors arrive on a guided trip from Tirana or Berat.
