Skrapar

Berat, Albania

Why visit Skrapar?

Skrapar is a mountainous municipality and historical district in eastern Berat County, centred on the small town of Çorovodë (population ~5,000) on the upper Osum River. It is one of Albania's least-visited but most scenically rewarding corners — a land of deep canyons, sacred mountains, raki villages and Bektashi shrines. The dominant landmarks are the Osum Canyon, gouged for some 26 km through limestone, and Mount Tomorr (2,416 m), an Albanian national park and the holiest mountain of the Bektashi Sufi order.

Skrapar has long been famous nationally for two things: producing the country's most prized raki (grape brandy) and being the spiritual home of Albanian Bektashism. Daily life is quiet and agricultural; tourism is small-scale and seasonal, peaking with the spring rafting window and the 20 August Bektashi pilgrimage to the Abbas Ali tomb on Tomorr.

The climate is continental — cool springs, warm dry summers (canyon rafting is best March–May before water levels drop), crisp autumns, and cold snowy winters at altitude.

By Car / Road

From Berat ~45 km (1h) to Çorovodë on SH75 via Poliçan. From Tirana ~165 km (3h). From Korçë ~110 km (2h30m) on mountain roads. Furgon minibuses from Berat to Çorovodë run several times daily (~250 lekë, 1h15m). A 4×4 is recommended for higher trailheads and Tomorr-side villages.

Çorovodë town is walkable. Reaching the canyon viewpoints, raki villages and Tomorr trailheads requires your own car, a 4×4 transfer arranged through guesthouses, or pre-booked rafting/hiking transport from Berat.

What are the things to do?

  • Osum Canyon (Kanioni i Osumit) — the headline sight: 26 km of narrow gorge with walls 30–80 m high, dramatic when rafted in spring.

  • Mount Tomorr National Park — 2,416 m sacred peak; Bektashi teqe (lodge) and tomb of Abbas Ali near the summit, focus of a major August pilgrimage.

  • Bogovë Waterfall — emerald pool reached by a short walk from Bogovë village (just inside Berat municipality on the canyon's edge).

  • Çorovodë town — modest central square, a small bazaar, and traditional stone houses on the slopes.

  • Bektashi teqes in surrounding villages — a network of small shrines reflecting Skrapar's Bektashi heritage.

  • Osum Canyon rafting — half-day trips March–May, ~€40–60 per person, run by Berat-based outfitters (Albania Rafting Group and others).

  • Hike Mount Tomorr — best as a guided 2-day trip with overnight at altitude.

  • Visit raki distilleries in surrounding villages — many small producers welcome casual visits; ask at your guesthouse.

  • Join the Bektashi pilgrimage (20–25 August) for an extraordinary cultural experience on Tomorr's summit.

  • Mountain biking on the network of dirt roads above Çorovodë.

Where to eat?

Eating in Skrapar means simple, hearty mountain food — slow-cooked lamb, dairy, mountain herbs, byrek, trout from the Osum.

  • Restorant Osumi, Çorovodë — central, traditional fare with grilled meats and bean dishes; mains 500–900 lekë.
  • Guesthouse dining in villages around the canyon — set menus of homemade dishes, usually ~€10–15 per person; the most rewarding way to eat in the area.
  • Pizzeria & grill spots on Çorovodë's main road for cheaper meals.

Vegetarian options are easy (byrek, bean stews, grilled vegetables, dairy).

Where to drink?

This is raki country — sampling Skrapari raki at the source is the local rite of passage. Most cafés on the Çorovodë square will offer house raki by the glass for 100–200 lekë. Tap water is mountain-sourced and generally safe; bottled is widely available.

  • Budget: family guesthouses in Çorovodë and villages around the canyon, ~€20–30 with breakfast.
  • Mid-range: Hotel Osumi and similar small hotels in Çorovodë, ~€35–50; canyon-edge guesthouses such as Albturist Çorovodë offer better atmosphere.
  • Upscale / heritage: none in the district — for higher comfort, base in Berat (1h) and visit Skrapar as a day or overnight excursion.

What should you buy?

Skrapar's raki rrushi (grape raki) is its signature product — single-village bottles bought at the source are unmatched. Look also for wild mountain honey, chestnuts and small batches of walnut liqueurs. There are no formal craft shops; buy from producers' homes or village kiosks.
