Polican

Berat, Albania

Why visit Polican?

Poliçan is a small town of around 9,000 people in Berat County, central-southern Albania, set on the upper Osum River at about 600 m elevation in the foothills of Mount Tomorr. It grew during the communist era around a large munitions factory (KM Poliçan), still the town's main employer. For travellers it is mostly a gateway to the Osum Canyon and Tomorr National Park rather than a destination in itself, with a cool summer climate and easy access to some of central Albania's most dramatic landscapes.

The character is quiet, green and almost alpine in feel — a strong contrast to the hot Berat plain just to the north-west. Best visited April–June (for canyon rafting and wildflowers) or September–October (for clear hiking weather). Winters are cold with occasional snow.

  • Mount Tomorr (2,416 m) — sacred mountain rising east of town; trailheads for summit hikes.
  • Munitions factory complex (KM Poliçan) — visible from the road, an example of Hoxha-era heavy industry; not open to visitors but a striking landscape feature.

  • Raft the Osum Canyon — half-day trips in spring (March–May) run by Berat-based operators starting near Çorovodë; ~€40–60.
  • Hike to Bogovë Waterfall — easy 30-minute walk from Bogovë village.
  • Summit Mount Tomorr — multi-day or long day hike from the eastern trailheads; best with a local guide.
