About Chenartu

Chenartu is a district in western Uruzgān Province, located in the Helmand River region. It is a remote, sparsely populated district with a Pashtun majority. The area is extremely arid and agriculture depends entirely on irrigation.

Summers are intensely hot and winters are mild. The only viable travel period is the cool season from November to February.

How to reach

By Plane

Tarinkot Airport (TII) is about 140 km east. Kandahar International Airport (KDH) is about 130 km south.

By Train

By Car / Road

From Tarinkot, head west through Deh Rawood and Shahidi Hassas. The road is unpaved and rough. Travel time is 4–5 hours. A 4WD vehicle is essential.

The district centre is a small cluster of buildings. Walking is the only option.

  • Helmand River landscape – Arid desert with narrow green strips along the river.
  • Traditional Baloch and Pashtun settlements – Mud-brick compounds.

The remote landscape is suitable for experienced adventure travellers. Hiking, photography, and cultural observation are the main activities.

No accommodation exists in Chenartu. Expedition camping with full desert gear is the only option. Most travellers visit as a day trip from Tarinkot.

The local market sells basic necessities including rice, oil, tea, and fresh seasonal produce.
