Barg-e Matal

Barg-e Matal is a district in northeastern Nūristān Province, located in a remote valley near the border with Badakhshān. It is one of the most isolated districts in Afghanistan, accessible only by rough mountain tracks. The population is Nuristani, known for their distinct culture and traditions.

The climate is alpine, with heavy snow in winter. The area is accessible only in summer (June–September).

No nearby airports. The nearest is Kabul (KBL), about 250 km southwest.

Barg-e Matal is reachable by 4WD from Parun, but the road is extremely rough and often impassable. Travel time from Parun is 3–5 hours in good conditions.

Walking is the only practical transport.

Treat all stream water.

There are no formal buildings offering accommodation. Camping is the primary option, or a homestay arranged through local contacts in Parun.

There are no shops in Barg-e Matal. All food, fuel, and supplies must be brought from Parun or Kabul.
