Khashrod

Khashrod is a district in southeastern Nīmrōz Province, located in a remote part of the Dasht-e Margo desert. It is one of the least populated districts of Afghanistan, with a sparse population of Baloch and Pashtun nomads and settled farmers.

The climate is extremely arid with scorching summers and mild winters. The only viable time to visit is the cool season (November–February).

By Plane

Zaranj Airport (ZAJ) is the nearest airfield, about 130 km northwest. A 4WD vehicle is required for the final approach.

By Car / Road

From Zaranj, drive southeast on unpaved desert tracks for about 2.5–3 hours. A 4WD vehicle with good clearance is essential.

The district centre consists of a small cluster of buildings. Travel is on foot or by 4WD.

• Dasht-e Margo – One of the most desolate desert landscapes in Afghanistan, stretching to the horizon.

• Traditional Baloch settlements – Scattered hamlets with mud-brick compounds.

• Desert trekking – For experienced, well-prepared adventurers only.

• Nomad encounters – The area is used by Baloch nomadic herders.

Provisions must be carried from Zaranj. Local families may share basic meals if hosted.

Water supplies are scarce. Carry all drinking water.

No accommodation is available in the district. Camping with full desert gear is the only option for self-sufficient adventurers. Most travellers visit as a day trip from Zaranj.

There are no formal shops. Basic necessities must be brought from the provincial capital. Bring all supplies.
