Sheberghan is the provincial capital, known for the Yemshi Tepe archaeological site (the possible location of ancient Zariaspa/Kunduz) and the nearby Tillya Tepe (Golden Hill), where a spectacular hoard of Bactrian gold jewellery was discovered in 1978. The Jowzjan landscape features steppe plains and the Amu Darya river along the northern border.
Walking and hiking through the surrounding countryside and valleys are the primary activities. Visit the local bazaars and archaeological sites around Sheberghan. The Amu Darya river border area offers distinctive scenery of marshlands and sandbanks.
