Things to do
Herat city is one of Afghanistan's most historically rich cities, home to the Herat Friday Mosque (Masjid-e-Jami), the Herat Citadel (Qala Ikhtyaruddin), the Musalla Complex with its towering minarets, and the Gawhar Shad Mausoleum. The old city has covered bazaars and traditional blue-domed architecture.
Walking and hiking through the surrounding countryside and valleys are the primary activities. Explore the old city bazaars for carpets, textiles, and handicrafts. Day trips to the Chishti Sharif shrine complex or the Injil district's vineyards. Hike in the Paropamisus Mountains west of the city.
